If you’re training for a Hyrox race this season, the Hyrox rule changes for 2026/27 are now live and two things happened last week that you need to understand. One is a set of rule changes that will affect your race day. The other is a conversation about what we owe each other on the start line.
What happened at Hyrox Beijing
On 12 September, Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk experienced bowel incontinence mid-race in Beijing. She was allowed to continue, finished first in Pro Women in 1:01:23, and days later retroactively withdrew and forfeited her points after a wave of online backlash. Hyrox apologised, completed a full venue clean-down, and co-founder Moritz Fuerste confirmed that “new rules and procedures” are now in place. Hyrox also warned that anyone identified making threats against athletes would receive a permanent ban from all its events.

The headline change is Section 12.3. Race Directors now have explicit authority to withdraw an athlete where blood, vomit, urine or faeces poses a welfare or contamination risk. The wording is “may withdraw”, not “must”, so it’s a judgement call, but the call is now clearly theirs to make.
The rest of the 2026/27 competition standards were published in June and matter just as much for your training.
Incomplete stations mean disqualification. Every station, in full. No partial credit.
Sandbag lunges. Dropping the bag twice is a 15 second penalty rather than an automatic DQ, with no warnings. Your final lunge counts when your lead foot lands beyond the finish line.
Doubles. Partners can be no more than 10 seconds apart as measured by timing, and you can’t start a station until you’re back together. Train the transitions, not just the stations.
Start tunnel. Linger after your wave goes and it’s a one minute penalty.
Chalk. Only event-supplied chalk on race day. Carry your own between stations and it’s two minutes gone. Save your GripTek for training.
Smaller clarifications. Face the direction of travel on the sled push. Stay seated on the rower until a judge confirms your distance. Jumping on the SkiErg is allowed if your feet return to the base plate. A 5cm stagger on burpee broad jumps is fine.
Print that list. Tape it to your gym wall. Most of these penalties are avoidable with awareness alone.
