If you’ve spent any time in a gym lately, you’ve probably heard the name. Hyrox is the fitness race exploding across the globe, selling out arenas from London to Chicago to Singapore. But what is Hyrox, exactly, and could a first-timer actually finish one? This beginner’s guide breaks it all down.
What Is Hyrox?
Hyrox is a standardised indoor fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations. Every athlete completes 8 x 1km runs, and after each run they tackle one of eight functional exercises. The format never changes: same distances, same stations, same order at every event worldwide. That means your finish time in Sydney is directly comparable to one in Berlin or New York.
It’s this consistency that has made Hyrox a global phenomenon. Whether you’re a weekend gym-goer or a seasoned athlete, everyone races the same course against the clock.
How a Hyrox Race Works
The structure is simple but demanding. You run 1km, complete a station, then head straight back onto the track for the next kilometre. There’s no rest between the run and the station. The eight stations always follow this order:
- SkiErg – 1,000m
- Sled Push
- Sled Pull
- Burpee Broad Jumps – 80m
- Rowing – 1,000m
- Farmers Carry – 200m
- Sandbag Lunges – 100m
- Wall Balls – 100 reps
By the finish line you’ve covered 8km of running plus a full-body functional workout. It’s a true test of endurance, strength and grit.
Is Hyrox Good for Beginners?
Absolutely. One reason Hyrox is growing so fast is that it’s genuinely accessible. The movements are simple to learn, and the Open division uses moderate weights, making it the perfect entry point for first-timers. You can also race in Doubles, splitting the stations with a partner, or as part of a Relay team.
Finish times typically range from around 60 minutes for elite athletes to 90–120 minutes for beginners. There’s no cut-off pressure hanging over your head, just you and the clock.
How to Train for Your First Hyrox
Most beginners train for 8 to 16 weeks before race day. The key is blending running with functional strength. Practise running when your legs are already fatigued, get comfortable with sled work and wall balls, and build the engine to keep moving between stations.
At TWL, we stock everything you need to train Hyrox-ready, from wall balls and sleds to the shoes and gear that carry you across the finish line.
