The 2026 CrossFit Games roared into life in San Jose, and day one delivered one of the most brutal openers in the event’s history — seven events, 30 men, 30 women, and a leaderboard that flipped right up to the final rep. Here’s where things stand.

Men: Sprague pounces late

Jay Crouch owned the front of the men’s field for most of the day, opening with a win in Event 1 (The 2007 Hopper) and backing it up with third on the 7,200m ranch run. But James Sprague — the 2024 Fittest Man on Earth — kept chipping away, stacking a runner-up run and a 590lb deadlift. When Crouch faded in the seventh and final event, Sprague seized the overall lead by a single point: 414 to Dallin Pepper’s 413, with Justin Medeiros third and Crouch fourth. It’s the tightest men’s top two we’ve seen at a Games opener in years.

Women: Cringle makes a statement

If the men’s race was a chess match, Aimee Cringle turned the women’s division into a statement. She won three of the seven events — the ranch run, the max deadlift (425lb), and a lung-busting 20-lap bike race in 19:10 — to top the leaderboard on 458 points.

Behind her, the title is far from settled. Lucy Campbell (420) closed the day with a stunning sub-11-minute swim win, while Maddie Sturt (407) took the very first event and sits third. Haley Adams and Emma Lawson are lurking, too.

The takeaway

Four days in, and the Fittest on Earth is anyone’s guess. Sprague and Cringle hold the reins, but with margins this fine, day two could reshuffle everything.
