2017 Reebok CrossFit Games Day 1 Recap

New home. New terrain. New continents represented. New names on the leaderboard.

The first day of the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games is in the books and it was nothing short of exciting. Individual athletes started the day with a pair of endurance tests, which brought some surprising shake ups to the leaderboard. Mid-day, the closing event was announced, a variation of Amanda which doubled the number of reps for a 13-11-9-7-5 rep scheme. With this event came history of not only a memory of an amazing athlete, Amanda Miller, but also as the first event programmed in 2010 when The CrossFit Games moved to Carson, California.

The leaderboards for the Individual Men and Women look a lot different than one might have thought with a lot of the usual subjects well out of the Top 10. The most surprising, however, is Josh Bridges who currently sits in 32nd after day 1. Another surprising twist to day one is Camille Leblanc-Bazinet withdrawing from competition after a fall on the Cyclocross course that dislocated her shoulder, a re-injury from a few weeks ago.

Here are your Top 10 Men and Women after Day 1:

On the Teams side of things, though there are almost 10 rookie teams competing this year, CrossFit Invictus and CrossFit Fort Vancouver, the only two teams in CrossFit Games history to compete for all nine eligible years, sit in first and third, respectively. Sandwiched in between is the crowd favorite and defending champs, CrossFit Mayhem. A notable moment for the Teams is for the first time, Great Britain is in the house as CrossFit JST makes it’s first ever CrossFit Games appearance.

Here is your Top 10 Teams going into Day 2:

Tomorrow, the Individual Men and Women will take the floor to test their 1RM in Event 5. Today, it was the Teenagers’ turn and two athletes set the bar with impressive numbers. It was 16-year-old Taylor Babb, the three time CrossFit Games’ athlete that snatched her way to a first place finish in the Girls 16-17 year old division with a huge 195lb lift. And on the boys’ side, 17-year-old Guilherme Malheiros opened his rookie Games debut with a 291lb snatch.

Team and Individual athletes will open Day 2 on the obstacle course. For all the information you need to know, head over to our viewing guide.

CrossFit Open Workout 15.2

CrossFit Open Workout 15.2 – Results

CrossFit Open Workout 15.2 is now in the books, with huge improvements across the board for athletes who also completed 14.2 in last year’s CrossFit Open.

With the “leaderboarding” ever so intense this year, we all thought it would be Camille Leblanc Bazinet, the 2014 CrossFit Games Champion who would take 15.2 with a total of 427 reps. However, it was the late submission of 2013 CrossFit Games Athlete Natalie Newhart (McLain) who surpassed Bazinet with a total of 441 repetitions of the ascending ladder of chest to bar pull ups and overhead squats.

On the men’s side of the draw, all eyes were on Rich Froning and Mat Fraser. Froning posted 413 reps and Fraser 409, however were upstaged by fellow CrossFit Games Veteran Josh Bridges with a score of 435. The round of 24 proved to be too illusive for Bridges who posted the highest total overall, just 13 reps before the cut off.

It’s a likely story after two weeks of the CrossFit Open, with all top five on the standings seasoned games veterans. Could this be the year for Nick Urankar? After competing in the games in 2012, Uraknar has since found it difficult to make it out of the Central East Regionals and onto the CrossFit Games. However with Rich Froning going team this year, their may be an opening for Urankar to leverage his performances in the CrossFit Open to make it to the final dance in Carson, California later this year.

Reigning CrossFit Games Champion Camille Le-blanc Bazinet sits atop of the Open standings, but Emily Bridgers and Kara Webb are hot on her heels. With a point to prove this year after missing the games in 2014, Stacie Tovar is currently in 6th position aiming to put last year’s performance behind her.

Team competition heats up this year, with Jason Khalipa and Rich Froning competing under their affiliates NorCal CrossFit and CrossFit Mayhem. Both of these teams are in the Top 10 which is currently dominated by 2014 Affiliate Cup Champions CrossFit Invictus.

Leaderboard – Australian Women

Screenshot 2015-03-11 03.58.08

Kara Webb lights up the Women’s leaderboard with her heroic effort into the 22s for 15.2. Webb was the only female to break into the 400s, with Jess Coughlan and Denae Brown posting scores of 354 and 353 respectively.

CrossFit Open Workout 15.1 Results

Dave Castro kicked off the CrossFit Open for 2015 with another AMRAP for 15.1. However, this time he followed the first workout with a subsequent 1RM Clean and Jerk attempt. With all scores submitted, we take a look at who topped the leaderboard both worldwide and in the Australian region.

The Results: Worldwide – Men

CrossFit Open Workout 15.1 - Mens

Nick Urankar came out on top for 15.1 with a score of 228 for 15.1 and a max Clean and Jerk of 375lbs. He was followed closely by Rich Froning and Matt Frazer who both repeated the workout after their initial workout for the announcement. Jason Khalipa, another veteran who has decided to go team with NorCal CrossFit this year showed he is still among the elite finishing fourth.

Urankar, the owner of CrossFit 061 hailing from arguably the toughest region in the Central East has often been over shadowed by other competitors but not on CrossFit Open Workout 15.1. Urankar finished 9th place at Central East Regionals last year and has started off strongly to find his way back to Regionals this year. Could this be his year?

The top ten leaderboard is full of CrossFit Games Veterans, including Scott Panchik, Ben Smith, Alert-Dominic Larouche, Neal Maddox and Travis Mayer. A rising star in Alex Anderson, brother of CrossFit Games Competitor ZA Anderson has followed in his brothers footsteps looking to take the next step to the CrossFit Games with a seventh place finish overall.

Other notable mentions include Dan Bailey (14th) who smashed 15.1 with a score of 241 but couldn’t keep up with the heavier men in 15.1A. Garret Fisher after missing out on the CrossFit Games in 2014, is trailing behind in 20th place. Only time will tell if these men creep up and dominate in the upper end of the leaderboard, or if Urankar can come out of nowhere and hold onto that number 1 placing.

Worldwide – Women

CrossFit Open Leaderboard - Women

Another wildcard has rocketed into first place on the Women’s side of the CrossFit Open in Maude Charron. Charron has come out of Canada East taking out the number 1 ranking for 15.1 and 15.1a. Previously missing out on the CrossFit Games after taking 6th place at Regionals there is no doubt Charron will be pleased to edge out the reigning CrossFit Games Champion Camille Leblanc-Bazinet. The 21 year old Canadia, completed 223 reps of the toes to bar, deadlift and snatch triplet and backed up with a 240lb Clean and Jerk to finish the first week on top.

Camille Leblanc-Bazinet follows in second place with 239 reps and a 227lb Clean & Jerk, just edging out Emily Bridgers who is in third. Much loved young favorite Lauren Fisher sits in 4th and Stacie Tovar, who missed out on the CrossFit Games in 2014 has a point to prove sitting in 5th overall.  Kara Webb is the highest placed Australian, sitting in 6th place after the first week.

Australia – Men

Australian Men's Leaderboard

After a significant game of cat and mouse, the Australian Men finally submitted their scores. Dean Linder-Leighton topped the leaderboard for Australia, also placing 45th worldwide. Linder-Leighton finished with 217 reps on 15.1 and followed up with 322lb / 146kg Clean and Jerk. Closely followed by Ben Garard and CrossFit Games Competitors Brandon Swan and Khan Porter.  Veteran Chad Mackay threw up the biggest clean and jerk in the Top 20 with 327lb / 148kg. Rob Forte, who finished 12th in the 2014 CrossFit Games and the winner of last years Australian Region is back in 8th place.

Teams – Australia

Teams Australia

With only 30 positions up for grabs this year, the Team competition has also heated up in the Australian Region. CrossFit Active is leading the way in the Australian region with the Sydney Siders battling their neighbors CrossFit Norwest and CrossFit Athletic in the top three. Zaks Pack East Tamakai sits in 4th place and the highest place team from New Zealand. Notable mention goes to Schwartz’s CrossFit Melbourne who have set a goal on getting two teams to Regionals this year holding 5th place after their finish in 6th at the regionals last year.
