Three Countries, One Podium

There were a lot of surprising moments during the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games, but one thing that wasn’t a surprise was the man standing on top of the Men’s podium—defending champ, Mat Fraser. Last year, Fraser won in an impressive fashion, putting over 150 points between him and Ben Smith who Fraser fell short of in 2015. This year he was determined to defend his title and he knew exactly what he needed to do.

Fraser cashed in on four event wins over the weekend, slowly but surely branding points, putting significant distance between him and the rest of the field. It worked. Not only was Fraser named The Fittest Man on Earth once again, but made history doing it. Fraser was more than 200 points ahead of the second fittest man, Canada’s Brent Fikowski when the last buzzer sang. At this rate, he’ll be chasing down Rich Froning’s record of four back to back Games’ Championships.

After narrowly missing the podium during his rookie year in 2016 by two points, Brent Fikowski wasn’t going to let that happen again. “The Professor” proved that by starting the weekend by coming out swinging, securing himself a first place finish in Event 1, Run-Swim-Run. That set the tone and though he had two finishes outside the top 15, he made up for it with an additional event win. It may have been a battle, but it was one he was prepared to face. He managed well and earned himself a silver medal, 82 points ahead of the last spot on the podium.

Rounding out the podium representing Australia was Ricky Garard, the rookie who caught everyone’s attention after his first career event win in Event 2. The former professional rugby player attributed his success in Cyclocross to growing up on a farm and riding his bike to school. Moving through the weekend, Garard only found himself outside of the top 15 in two events. Maybe the experience of his brother Games’ athlete Ben Garard gave him a leg up. Regardless, Ricky Garard is going to be a name you want to remember. Now with two event wins and experience of his own under his belt, he’s shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with. But only time will tell.

ELITE ATHLETES

The CrossFit Games have come and gone.  What were your thoughts? If you are anything like me, you thought “how is that possible?” We set our DVRs, we tune our satellite radio, and we glue ourselves to the television to watch elite athletes perform at the highest level. Week after week, in boxes around the country, we watch these people, seemingly average humans, attain greatest with their bodies. But, how do they do it? Is there some magic formula that causes these people to achieve amazing times, heavy lifts, or record speeds? How does an average athlete become a phenomenal elite athlete?

Screenshot 2016-08-08 05.45.56

If there is a secret formula, we all want a part of it. No matter the sport, the greats got there through ways some of us could never dream of. Sometimes it’s genetics. Sometimes we see families where athletics seem to run in their blood like brown hair. Sometimes athletes are born with the ability to perform their sport. In a recent interview 2016’s Fittest Man, Matt Fraser, discusses lifting in his youth and what they looked like for him. It was in his blood. However, not every athlete is born in to athletic prowess, and that doesn’t make it easy for that athlete. So, how do these athletes come to be the standard by which we measure ourselves? Passion, intensity, pride, mental fortitude. All of these attributes play a pivotal role in transforming an average athlete into elite.

Elite athletes must commit themselves to a training routine at which most of us would shudder. To be able to do this, a passion must come from somewhere we can scarcely imagine. An elite runner truly loves to run. They like the smell of the air in the morning, the sounds of their shoes gliding off the pavement, the feeling of the wind aiding them in their journey. It’s not just a run, but an expedition. To a CrossFit athlete there is nothing better than the feel of the barbell in their hand, and the sound of the weights crashing to the ground after a successful lift. To be an elite athlete, you have to love what you do. It becomes part of your soul. It’s just who you are.

It’s a look in their eye. Have you ever trained next to an elite athlete? Have you ever shared the same space as they prepared for their next big event? There is intensity in the air that cannot be matched. Had a bad run? You do it again. The round didn’t go as planned? You do it again. The way they push themselves is something most of us cannot understand. Intensity cannot be taught. There is no class on how to be intense during your workout. There is no way to copy the intensity of the person next to you. It’s the fire in your belly. It’s the constant desire to keep moving, to do better, to make it to the next level. Bad days come to every athlete. Things don’t always go as planned, but when you feel the intensity the elite feel, you wipe yourself off and you move on. You search for that feeling, that passion, that keeps you coming back.

Aristotle once said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” In essence, greatness is not obtained through random acts, but of constant and persistent hard work. Elite athletes are not handed a manual and told to show up. They do the work. They pour out the effort. They demand excellence, even in the midst of failure. The elite stand out because they do things and train in ways we regular folks cannot even dream of, and are often times scared of.  There are no days off when you are an elite athlete. You may have rest and recovery days, but there is always some aspect of training to be done. Mobility, mental training, or simply resting are all part of the preparation for an elite athlete. It’s not about what is done when you feel good. It’s about what is done every day. What is accomplished every time you lace up your shoes and do work.

Most of us will never experience the life and training of an elite athlete. We will never walk in their shoes and understand the strength and adversity they must take on day after day. For the athletes who do walk that path, it’s important to understand how and why. These men and women have a passion, an intensity, a drive, and a willingness to learn. Prominence is not handed to them. They don’t expect success every time they step into an arena, but they know the winning formula. They hold the secret many of us only dream of knowing. It’s not luck and it’s not happenstance. It’s a combination of mental fortitude, consistency, passion, and pride that turn these athletes into elite. So, sit back and watch. It’s going to be an amazing site to behold.

CrossFit Games Athlete Interview: Rees Machell

Now that the 2015 CrossFit Games are over and the dust has settled, TWL was lucky enough to catch up with the fittest teen in Australia– Rees Machell. Snagging fifth worldwide in the teen Open and a podium third place finish at the Games in the 16-17 year-old division, we expect Rees will be a blast to watch in the upcoming 2016 CrossFit season.

Read on to find out more about this incredible up and coming athlete:

– How did you get introduced to CrossFit?

Before CrossFit I raced motocross and played rugby league in Tumut. I received a back injury in league which stopped me from racing and footy until I had fixed it.  From there I started strength training at a globo gym, then decided I needed fitness, strength, power, speed etc so I decided I would try CrossFit. I’ve never looked back since.

– Hobbies? What are you doing when you’re not CrossFitting?
Riding dirt bikes, driving buggies up the bush with my good pal Little Lukey McMahon and waterskiing in the summer. Anything active!

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 10.07.46 AM

– What was your favorite 2015 Open WOD?
Probably 15.5, regardless of the teen weight it hurt… But I felt pretty strong in that workout.

– What was your favorite Games WOD?
“Amanda”

– What did it mean to you to make it to Carson?
Like a lot of hard work had paid off, and an awesome experience awaiting me. Was unreal!

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 9.38.49 AM

– How’d you like California? Did you get to explore much after your big victory?
California was a cool experience, the weather was too good. We didn’t explore too much after the competition as we couldn’t afford to stay too long. It was a sudden event and was hard to build up enough funds to stay long, but we did watch the Individuals- which was so awesome.

– Who’s your CrossFit idol?
Going to have to say Rich Froning, no doubt. Works hard and is humble.

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 9.43.17 AM

– Whats your least favorite movement?
Used to have a few but I worked on them, got better at them and now I love them! Most of the time was a few overhead exercises though.

– Walk us through a day in your life: What do you eat? When/How long do you train?
Leading up to the Games I trained 2-3 times a day. In the morning around 6:30 AM and in the afternoon around 4:30PM then sometimes lunch time aswell. At the moment I eat a lot of starchy carbs and whole meats as much as possible everyday because I’m trying to put on weight.

– What’s next? CrossFit Games 2016?
This was my last year being able to compete as a teenager, next years goal is to make it to Regionals. So, a whole lot of work!

– What are 3 items that are always in your gym bag?

My lifters, tape and protein powder.

– Plug time and shout outs!
Shout out to Little Lukey McMahon and the rest of the McMahon boys Josh and Aydan for teaching me almost everything I know about CrossFit, cheers boys! Also shout out to the Unbroken Athletic Apparel boys for all the support, Raw Fitness Equipment for helping Josh and I with raffling and the donations. Again Faster AUS/NZ for taking me aboard the development team and for the help preparing for the Games. Rob Forte and Reebok CrossFit Frankston for hosting their competition that raised an immense amount of $4,310 towards Josh and I. To all of the people in the CrossFit community and the community of Tumut who raised money to our GoFundMe page and to my friend’s and family. We couldn’t have done it without you guys and my appreciation towards you guys is beyond words.

The Men

CrossFit Games Men's Podium

The Men’s side of the draw went down to the final workout, with Ben Smith edging out Mat Fraser to claim the 2015 crown. Bjorgvin Karl Gudmunsson, the winner of the toughest test of the weekend “Murph” clinched third in arguably one of the toughest competitions.

The Women

CrossFit Games Womens Podium

Katrin Davidsdottir surged on the final day to surpass fellow Iceland native Sara Sigmundsdottir. Davidsdottir who missed out on the CrossFit Games in 2014, redeemed herself in the ultimate way possible. Tia-Clair Toomey had an amazingly consistent weekend, with solid Top 10 performances on the final workouts to rocket into second overall. Sigmundsdottir, who is no doubt a champion in years to come rounded out the podium in third.

The Teams

CrossFIt Mayhem

Once again, Rich Froning rose above to claim his fifth title overall. Froning captained CrossFit Mayhem to the affiliate cup win, edging out CrossFit Milton and UTE CrossFit. The competition was heated in the Californian sun, with Invictus who were widely tipped to podium finishing outside the top 10. The story of the weekend however came from NorCal CrossFit. Miranda Oldroyd suffered a torn ACL on the Clean & Jerk event and was forced to withdraw from the competition. Without the lack of alternates to sub in, NorCal were required to complete the workouts with only 5 of the 6 members limiting their chances of success.
