9 Female Athletes Breaking Barriers

Functional fitness is designed to push boundaries, break all the rules, and test you physically and mentally. It encourages you to do things you’ve never done, and dare to dream big. Perhaps one of the best parts of all? It’s put female athletes in the spotlight possibly more than any other sport, and they haven’t hesitated to prove they can do anything they set their minds to. These women play a significant role in fitness, as they break down all barriers and stereotypes society has created for women throughout the years. Their discipline and dedication to their sport are beyond moving, and we find them as sources of inspiration on the daily. Here are just a few of our favorites.

Amanda Allen

Amanda Allen had just nine months of training when she first entered the arena to compete at the Games. She’s a two-time champion in the 40-44 age division as well as a motivational speaker and coach. Last year, she underwent surgery to remove fibroids, but nothing could destroy her positive attitude. Allen showed all of us you can do anything you set your mind to, and her upbeat attitude is contagious!

Kara Saunders

Named 2017’s second fittest woman on earth and a six-time Crossfit Games competitor, Saunders is not only a professional athlete but also the owner of Crossfit Kova. She won the Spirit of the Games award and came first in Regionals — four times! One of the reasons we love Kara so much is because she sets a positive example for women about what it means to love your body.

Alethea Boon

Boon is a three-time Games competitor and former elite gymnast. After rupturing her Achilles tendon during a set of box jumps during the 2016 Games, she recovered and came back more determined than ever. More recently, she finished fifth in the 58kg weight class for Olympic weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games. It’s impossible not to look up to her.

Marya Drabicki

16-year-old Marya Drabicki is a Games athlete and also a USAW national champion. Drabicki has been open and honest with her followers about her journey getting healthy through training and smart eating, and her work ethic has clearly paid off. Way to be!

Tia-Clair Toomey

Toomey was born in Queensland and started her fitness journey in track and field. After only two years in the sport, she came in second at the 2015 Crossfit Games. In 2016, she got second place again, and also participated in the summer Olympics, representing Australia in Olympic weightlifting. In 2017 and 2018, she stood atop the podium at the Games, and in 2018, she became a Commonwealth Games gold medalist, taking first in her weight class for Olympic weightlifting. Nothing can stop this woman.

Annie Thorisdottir

Annie owns Crossfit Reykjavik in Iceland, her hometown. Her past includes ballet, gymnastics, and pole vaulting. She’s a two-time Games champion (a rarity!) and was 2017’s third fittest woman on earth. Thorisdottir once suffered a back injury she feared would prevent her from ever training — even walking — again, but she refused to quit. Her determination is unparalleled.

Brooke Ence

Ence used to be a high-level dancer but eventually decided to pursue functional fitness and as a rookie, qualified for the Games in 2015. Ever since she first came on the scene, she’s been a crowd favorite. In 2017, she suffered a herniated disc and had to pull back significantly from training. These hurdles have not stopped her, though. She’s back in the gym working harder than ever and also spent time on the big screen, acting in Wonder Woman and Justice League.

Krystal Cantu

Cantu is major goals. This adaptive athlete laughs in the face of a challenge and has overcome obstacles with grace and strength. It’s not just her fitness we love — it’s her uplifting attitude. Check out that monster deadlift.

Katrin Davidsdottir

Davidsdottir took the title of Fittest Woman on Earth twice, in 2015 and 2016. Her passion for the sport is palpable, and women all across the globe follow her not only for her fitness and nutrition guidance but because of the feeling of hope and ambition she carries with her wherever she goes.

Every day, each one of these women is an example of empowerment, strength, discipline, and unlimited possibility. Who inspires you the most?

Brooke Ence’s Go-To Hotel WOD

If you spend even a little time travelling, you’re probably familiar with the challenge of trying to get a workout in when you’re away from home. If you’re staying at a hotel with a gym, that certainly helps, but figuring out what to do while you’re there is a whole other story. As a frequent traveller herself, Brooke Ence deals with this on a regular basis. She recently took to Instagram to share her go-to hotel WOD.

Inspiring Words From Brooke Ence and Other Athletes Not Going to the Games

With the Games on the way, a select group of athletes is in the final stages of preparation for the competition they’ve been waiting for all year. Others didn’t quite make it that far. Brooke Ence was one such athlete. Her comeback from injury was nothing short of remarkable, and while she has come an incredibly long way in such a short amount of time, the Games just weren’t in the cards for her this season. As always, though, she had some wise words to share with her fans.

Well….. I M B A C K. ?? – March 31st 2017 , Spinal Fusion of C6,C7 – Due to all the atrophy in my upper body, right after my surgery I got an MRI on my left shoulder and the posterior labrum was torn – With the help of my coaches and doctors, I had a plan to train as hard as my body would allow during my recovery with the Open and Regionals in mind. I of course constantly thought about my “Disney Moment” I was going to have – { 1 year post surgery and qualifying for the 2018 Crossfit Games} . That would have been the greatest comeback of all time. ?? – I may not be going to the CF Games to compete this year but I did experience a “Disney” moment. I have NEVER felt more support during a competition in my life. I see 1M on my social media and I KNOW that it’s a lot of people and like to think all of them support me. But, actually until this weekend while competing in Del Mar, walking out with Heat 1 in all but 1 workout. I have never FELT or HEARD what it is like to have 1M. You guys are loud AF ? and I want to say thank you AGAIN for keeping me going this weekend. I could not have done it without you. ? – Coming out of Regionals sore AF and continuing my recovery and epic comeback story ? ?: @doooker #itmakesence #thecomeback #crossfit

She wasn’t the only one keeping it positive.

I’ll try to make this short and sweet ? •••• So didn’t see this one coming ?I didn’t qualify for the @crossfitgames but you know what?! I wouldn’t change one thing about the weekend. I poured my heart and soul into my preparation, I gave it everything I had on the floor, and I had a ball!! •••• It’s been a wild 6 months. I’ve flipped my life upside down and taken leaps of faith that didn’t appear to have soft landings waiting on the other side—or any landings at all sometimes ?through it all, I haven’t been let down ONCE. I’ve found so much joy and peace chasing after things I’m passionate about—Crossfit being one of them! ••• The interactions I had with so many people this weekend was so much more rewarding than any victory on a competition floor. And to me, THAT’S what it’s about. I’m not validated or defined by a qualifying spot. I’m validated and defined by Christ who has a perfect plan for my life?? ••• Thank you everyone who cheered, sent messages, or stopped me to say hello. I LOVE being a part of all of your lives!! •••• I told you guys 2018 was gonna be wild. We’re only half way!! There’s still so much more action to come ??#peaceandblessings ??? @bearkomplex

Self Reflection is apart of self growth. Regionals 2018… Started off great then the tidal wave hit. Day 2 I got caught with a hand full of no reps and instead of being composed and focused I let them get to me. Such a rookie mistake but it’s one I’ll learn from and never let happen again. Learning to control what I can control will only make me become a more confident athlete. It hurts like hell watching my Buddy’s take the podium and move on to the next level. It hurts even worse having to walk home empty handed knowing I had more but just under performed. Time to get back to the drawing board and prepared my self better than ever for next years tryouts! Thank you to everyone who supports me and makes competing possible. #crossfitgames @crossfitgames

And just like that another regionals has come and gone. This wasn’t the outcome I wanted but I learned so much from the weekend and you better believe I’ll be coming back next year. I’m so beyond grateful for my family and friends who supported me throughout the weekend and have continued to do so day in and day out. Thank you to all of you guys for all the amazing messages, love, and support! Many more thank you’s to come! It’s been a good week of laying low, getting out of the gym, and enjoying the Arizona sunshine but I’m definitely itching to get back to training ? Hope everyone is having an amazing weekend and good luck to all the athletes competing this weekend and next! #opex #faithoverfear #lovewhatyoudo #crossfit #SouthRegionals #smile

Brooke Ence Talks About Finding the Right Start Position

All of our proportions are different. Some of us have wider hips than others. Some have shorter femurs. These slight but important distinctions between us mean we will each set up for our lifts differently because our bodies bend and move in unique ways. Factor in how each athlete will feel comfortable with different positions, and you have countless ways to perform one lift. This was something Brooke Ence touched on in a recent Instagram video. After trying to change her snatch start position, she reverted back to what she already knows.

If is not broken, don’t fix it . I have spent a period of time TRYING to change my start position in my Snatch to a more narrow stance. A “typical” start position if you will; feet directly under my hips. Well, that position is just NOT for me. I am faster and stronger with a slightly wider start position . WHY DID I TRY TO CHANGE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE? Well, I wanted to be better about “jumping” or “moving my feet”. Turns out I can still have some movement even though my foot position barely changes. ?? at least now I can say that I CAN use a couple different t positions but I know for certain which one I will be the most successful with. ? wide stance with that deep catch… mmhmm ????? Accessory Work From Brooke Ence — Barefoot!

If anyone knows the importance of caring for your body, it’s Brooke Ence. Having suffered from herniated discs in her neck and undergoing surgery, recovery and rehab were once Ence’s full-time job. These days, she’s back in action and ready to do some damage, but she still sets aside plenty of time for plain old accessory work. Recently, she kicked off her shoes — literally — for a little extra rehab.

Brooke Ence Got Gymnasty With This Challenging Ring Complex

Brooke Ence’s comeback since her surgery has been an inspiring one, to say the least. Through her recovery, she’s made smart choices in the gym in an effort to maintain strength while giving her body ample time to heal; and it’s safe to say she got the job done. Her comeback continues, but Ence isn’t quitting. She recently tackled this extra challenging ring complex but somehow managed to make it look easy.

Brooke Ence recently shared a spicy little complex she sometimes does, consisting of toes-to-bar, pull-ups and strict muscle-ups.

CrossFit Athlete Brooke Ence in ‘Justice League’

Just this week, Zack Snyder’s Justice League hit theaters, released November 16th. We already knew the movie would be epic; and as an added bonus, CrossFit Games competitor Brooke Ence plays the role of an Amazon, a super-powerful woman. It turns out this CrossFit athlete spent her last offseason filming in Europe!

Some of her latest Instagram posts show her with the Amazon costume, as well as walking down the red carpet showing off her #gainz. This isn’t her first time on the big screen, either, as she also appeared in Wonder Woman as a character named Penthiselea, who was — you got it —  an Amazonian warrior.

While it might seem strange seeing a CrossFitter in the movies, Ence actually has a background in theater and dance. While her life obviously took a different turn, this athlete is multi-talented and clearly has what it takes to wow on the big screen.
